How to Cancel a Subscription When You Can't Log In

Updated February 2025 · 8 min read

You see a charge on your bank statement. You want to cancel it. But you can't log in — maybe you forgot your password, maybe you don't remember which email you used, maybe the company changed their website. This is one of the most frustrating situations in personal finance.

Good news: you don't need to log in to cancel most subscriptions. Here are 7 methods, from easiest to nuclear option.

💡 First: Find What You're Paying For

Not sure what's charging you? Upload your bank statement to JustCancel — we identify every recurring charge and give you direct cancel links, even for services with dark pattern cancellation flows.

Method 1: Reset Your Password (2 minutes)

Start with the obvious. Go to the service's login page and click "Forgot Password." Try every email address you use:

Pro tip: Search ALL your email accounts for the company name. Look for "Welcome to..." or "Your account..." emails — they'll show which email you signed up with.

Method 2: Cancel Through Your App Store (3 minutes)

If you subscribed through the App Store or Google Play, you don't need to log into the app at all. Cancel directly through your device:

iPhone:

  1. Settings → Your Name → Subscriptions
  2. Find the subscription → Cancel

Android:

  1. Google Play Store → Profile → Payments & subscriptions → Subscriptions
  2. Find the subscription → Cancel

This works even if you've deleted the app. See our complete guide to finding all subscriptions on your phone.

Method 3: Contact Customer Support Directly (5-15 minutes)

You don't need account access to call or email a company. Most can look up your account using:

Call and say: "I need to cancel my subscription. I can't access my account, but my card ending in XXXX was charged $XX.XX on [date]."

Check our cancel guides for 440+ services — we list phone numbers, emails, and the fastest cancellation method for each one.

Method 4: Use the Cancellation Email Template (5 minutes)

If you can't find a phone number (or the company is impossible to call), send this email:

Subject: Cancel My Subscription — Account Lookup Request

Hi,

I need to cancel my subscription but cannot access my account. Please look up my account using the following information:

• Name: [Your Full Name]

• Card ending in: [Last 4 digits]

• Charge amount: $[Amount] on [Date]

• Email addresses I may have used: [List them]

Please cancel my subscription immediately and confirm cancellation in writing. Under the FTC's Click-to-Cancel rule, I am requesting simple cancellation without being required to speak with a representative or complete additional steps.

Thank you,

[Your Name]

We have more templates in our cancellation email template guide. Mentioning the FTC rule adds legal weight — learn more about the Click-to-Cancel rule.

Method 5: Ask Your Bank to Block the Charge (10 minutes)

If the company won't help, your bank can:

⚠️ Warning About New Card Numbers

Getting a new card number will stop the charge, but some merchants use card updater services (Visa Account Updater, Mastercard ABU) that automatically get your new card number. This is legal. If this happens, you'll need to contact the merchant directly or dispute the charge.

More details in our guides on stopping recurring credit card payments and stopping recurring debit card payments.

Method 6: File a Chargeback (15-30 minutes)

If you've tried everything and the company still won't cancel, dispute the charge with your bank:

  1. Call your bank's dispute department (number on back of card)
  2. Say you want to dispute a recurring charge
  3. Explain you've tried to cancel but can't access your account
  4. Provide dates of attempted cancellation (emails, call records)
  5. Request the charge be reversed and future charges blocked

Banks take chargebacks seriously — merchants who get too many lose their ability to process cards. This is your leverage. See our full chargeback guide for step-by-step instructions.

Method 7: Use Virtual Cards for Prevention (Ongoing)

Once you've dealt with the current subscription, prevent this from happening again:

Read our full guide on using virtual cards to manage subscriptions.

What If the Company No Longer Exists?

If a company went out of business but is still charging you, you're dealing with a zombie subscription. This usually means another company acquired them and is continuing to bill. In this case:

  1. Search for "[company name] acquired by" to find the new owner
  2. Contact the new company's support
  3. If no acquirer exists, dispute with your bank — a defunct company can't contest a chargeback

Your Legal Rights

Under the FTC's Click-to-Cancel rule (effective 2024), companies must make cancellation as easy as signup. If a company makes you jump through hoops to cancel — especially requiring a login to an account you can't access — they may be violating federal law.

You can file a complaint with the FTC or your state attorney general.

FAQ

Can I cancel a subscription without logging in?

Yes. Contact customer support directly with your card's last 4 digits, cancel through your app store, ask your bank to block the charge, or dispute it. You don't need account access to cancel.

Can my bank stop a recurring subscription payment?

Yes. Request a "stop payment" ($15-35 fee) or a new card number (free). Some banks also let you block specific merchants. Be aware that card updater services may give the merchant your new card number automatically.

What if I forgot which email I used?

Search all your email accounts for the company name or "welcome" / "receipt" emails. Contact the company's support with your card's last 4 digits — they can look up your account by payment method.
