Why is everything getting more expensive?

Subscription companies are caught in a growth trap. Wall Street demands revenue growth every quarter, and there are only two ways to get it: add new subscribers or charge existing ones more. Most major services are running out of new subscribers, so prices go up.

The math is brutal. If you had 10 subscriptions averaging $12/month in 2023, those same services now cost roughly $15/month on average — an extra $360/year for the same content you were already paying for.

What to do about it

• Audit ruthlessly. Upload your bank statement to find every recurring charge. Most people find 2-3 subscriptions they forgot about.
• Cancel what you don't use weekly. If you haven't used a service in the last 7 days, you probably don't need it.
• Rotate instead of stacking. Subscribe to one streaming service at a time. Watch what you want, cancel, move to the next.
• Check for annual discounts. Many services offer 15-30% off if you pay yearly — but only if you're sure you'll use it all 12 months.
