How to Cancel Zipcar Membership in 2026 (Phone Required)
Updated February 2026 · 4 min read
Zipcar charges an annual membership fee of $90/year (or $9/month for monthly plans) — and that's before the per-trip costs. If you're not using Zipcar regularly, you're paying for access you don't need. The catch: you can't fully cancel online. You need to call.
How to Cancel Zipcar by Phone
- Call 1-866-494-7227 (Mon-Fri 8am-7pm, Sat 9am-5pm EST)
- Have your account number ready (found in the Zipcar app under Account)
- Say "I want to cancel my Zipcar membership"
- Confirm you have no upcoming reservations
- Get a cancellation confirmation number and ask for email confirmation
⚠️ Cancel upcoming reservations first: Zipcar won't cancel your membership if you have active or upcoming reservations. Cancel all reservations in the app before calling.
Cancel Online (Limited)
Some accounts can request cancellation online:
- Log in at zipcar.com/account
- Go to My Account → Membership
- Look for a Cancel Membership option
- If it's not there, you must call — Zipcar limits online cancellation for some account types
Can You Get a Refund on the Annual Fee?
Zipcar's refund policy is strict:
- Within 30 days of signup: Full refund of application fee if you haven't used the service
- Annual fee: Generally non-refundable, but you keep access until the end of your paid period
- Monthly plan: Cancel before renewal date to avoid the next charge
- Driving credits: Unused credits expire and are not refundable
If you're close to your renewal date, time your cancellation so you don't pay for another year you won't use.
Is Zipcar Worth Keeping?
The break-even math for Zipcar in 2026:
- Zipcar cost: $90/year membership + $11-18/hour or $85-130/day per trip
- Rental car (Turo/traditional): $40-80/day, no membership fee
- Rideshare (Uber/Lyft): $15-30 per trip, no commitment
- Break-even: You need to use Zipcar about 2-3 times per month for the hourly convenience to beat alternatives
If you use it less than twice a month, you're better off with rideshare or traditional rentals.
Alternatives to Zipcar
- Turo: Peer-to-peer car rental, often cheaper for full-day trips
- Getaround: Similar to Zipcar but no annual fee in many cities
- Enterprise CarShare: Available in some markets, competitive hourly rates
- Traditional rental (Enterprise, Hertz): Better value for all-day needs
- Uber/Lyft: No commitment, no parking hassle, cheaper for short trips
Return Your Zipcard
You don't technically need to return the physical Zipcard — it gets deactivated when your membership ends. But if you have any pending damage claims or late fees, those will be charged to your card on file after cancellation. Check your account for any outstanding charges before cancelling.
