How to Cancel WP Engine in 2026
Updated February 2026 โข Difficulty: Medium โข $25-241+/month
๐จ WP Engine deletes your site data after cancellation. Back up everything BEFORE you cancel. Download a full backup from your WP Engine dashboard first.
Step 1: Back Up Your Site
- Log into my.wpengine.com
- Go to your site โ Backup Points
- Create a fresh backup and download it
- Also export your database separately via phpMyAdmin (Sites โ phpMyAdmin)
- Download your wp-content folder via SFTP
Step 2: Cancel Your Account
- Go to my.wpengine.com โ Account โ Cancel Account
- You may be redirected to a chat with a retention agent
- Alternatively, email cancellations@wpengine.com with your account name
- Request written confirmation of cancellation
WP Engine will try to offer you a discount or downgrade. If you've already decided and migrated, decline firmly. If you haven't migrated yet, a temporary discount might buy you time.
Annual Plan? Check Your Renewal Date
If you're on an annual plan, WP Engine typically doesn't offer prorated refunds. Cancel before your renewal date to avoid being charged for another year. Check your billing page for the exact renewal date.
Cheaper Hosting Alternatives
- Cloudways โ $14/month for managed cloud hosting (DigitalOcean), great performance
- DigitalOcean + WordPress โ $4-6/month, self-managed but fast
- Hostinger โ $2.99/month for managed WordPress (great for small sites)
- Kinsta โ $35/month (similar to WP Engine, slightly cheaper)
- Vercel/Netlify โ free tier for static sites or Next.js (if you can move off WordPress)
๐ฐ Cost Comparison (1 site)
WP Engine Startup: $25/month = $300/year
Cloudways (DigitalOcean): $14/month = $168/year
Hostinger Business: $3.99/month = $48/year
Savings: $132-252/year by switching
Migration Checklist
- Set up account with new host
- Install WordPress on new host
- Import your backup (use All-in-One WP Migration plugin)
- Update DNS to point to new host
- Test everything works on new host
- Wait 24-48 hours for DNS propagation
- THEN cancel WP Engine
๐ก Tip: WP Engine is premium hosting designed for high-traffic WordPress sites. If your site gets under 25K visits/month, you're paying for performance you don't need. A $4/month DigitalOcean droplet handles most small business sites just fine.
