Vivint costs $29.99-44.99/month for home security monitoring — that's $360-540/year. What makes Vivint particularly hard to leave is the long-term contract (typically 42-60 months) and equipment financing that essentially traps you into years of payments. Here's how to get out.
Vivint contracts are typically 42-60 months (3.5-5 years). Early termination requires paying the remaining balance of your equipment financing plus a cancellation fee. On a 5-year contract with $1,500 in equipment, canceling after 2 years could cost you $900+ in buyout fees.
Before calling, find your Vivint contract (check your email for the original agreement). Note: (1) contract start date, (2) contract length, (3) monthly payment, (4) equipment total. If you can't find it, ask Vivint to send you a copy — they're required to provide it.
If you signed up within the last 3 business days, federal law (FTC Cooling-Off Rule) gives you the right to cancel any contract signed at your home with no penalty. This applies to door-to-door Vivint salespeople. Call immediately and cite the FTC Cooling-Off Rule.

If you're moving to a location where Vivint can't provide service (apartment that won't allow installation, international move), you may be able to cancel without the full early termination fee. Ask specifically about "relocation cancellation" when you call.
Vivint's long-term contracts make it one of the hardest security systems to leave. Check your contract end date — if you're past it, cancel with 30-day notice. If you're still in contract, calculate the buyout cost and compare it against continuing to pay. Next time, go no-contract: SimpliSafe or Ring Alarm with equipment you own outright.
