How to Cancel Tonal in 2026 — Stop the $49/Month + Keep the Hardware
Last updated: February 2026 • Difficulty: Medium
⚠️ Tonal's ugly math: $2,995+ for the hardware, $495 for installation, $49/month subscription = $4,078 in year one alone. By year three, you've spent $5,254. A full home gym with adjustable dumbbells, rack, and barbell costs $1,500 with zero monthly fees. And Tonal nearly went bankrupt in 2023 — if they fold, your $3,000 wall unit becomes e-waste.
What Happens When You Cancel
- With subscription ($49/month): Full access to classes, programs, tracking, coaching features
- Without subscription: Free Lift mode — you can still use the arms and adjust weight manually
- You lose: All guided workouts, programs, personal records history, smart features
- You keep: Basic free-lift functionality, the physical resistance system
- The hardware is yours — Tonal cannot remotely brick it (but features are severely limited)
How to Cancel
- Open the Tonal app on your phone
- Go to Settings → Account → Membership
- Tap Cancel Membership
- Or email care@tonal.com with subject "Cancel Membership"
- Or call 1-855-MY-TONAL (1-855-698-6625)
- Cancellation takes effect at end of current billing cycle
💡 Still financing? Canceling the subscription doesn't cancel your hardware financing. If you financed through Affirm, those payments continue regardless. Check your Affirm account for remaining balance.
Retention Offers to Expect
- Discounted months: $24.99/month for 3-6 months (50% off) is commonly offered
- Pause option: Up to 3 months pause at no charge
- "You'll lose all your data" — True, your workout history is not exportable
- If you want the discount, tell them you're canceling due to cost — they'll almost always offer 50% off
What to Do with the Hardware
- Keep using Free Lift mode: It's still a functional cable machine — just no guided workouts
- Sell it: Used Tonals sell for $800-1,500 on Facebook Marketplace (yes, massive depreciation)
- Removal: Uninstall yourself or hire a handyman — it's wall-mounted with a bracket
- Keep the subscription on discount: If they offer 50% off ($24.99/month), it's more reasonable
Better Alternatives
- Adjustable dumbbells ($300-350): Bowflex SelectTech or PowerBlock — 5-52lbs, no subscription
- Resistance bands ($30-80): Can replicate most Tonal exercises at a fraction of the cost
- Cable machine ($500-1,500): Functional trainer gives you the same movements — no subscription
- Apple Fitness+ ($9.99/month): Strength training classes with Apple Watch tracking
- Peloton Guide ($95 + $12.99/month): Camera-based form tracking, much cheaper
The Math: Tonal vs Traditional Home Gym
Tonal over 3 years: $2,995 + $495 install + ($49 × 36) = $5,254. Home gym alternative: adjustable dumbbells ($300) + power rack ($400) + barbell set ($300) + bench ($200) + Apple Fitness+ ($360) = $1,560 total over 3 years. The home gym is 70% cheaper, works without internet, and never requires a subscription to function.
