How to Cancel Thumbtack in 2026 (Stop Lead Charges + Delete Pro Account)
Updated 2026-02-22 ยท 6 min read
๐ For Pros AND Customers
This guide covers both sides: if you're a pro/business paying for leads, and if you're a customer who signed up and wants to delete their account. Pros: skip to the "Cancel Pro Account" section. Customers: the "Delete Customer Account" section.
How Thumbtack Charges Pros
Thumbtack's revenue model charges professionals per lead โ not per job. You pay $15-100+ every time a customer contacts you through the platform, regardless of whether you get the job. The lead cost depends on your service category, location, and competition.
The problems pros complain about:
Fake leads: Bots and tire-kickers who never respond after the initial contact
Price shoppers: Customers who contact 5 pros just to get the lowest price, wasting everyone's lead fee
Auto-targeting: Thumbtack auto-sends your profile to customers without your approval, and you get charged
No refund for bad leads: If a customer ghosts you after initial contact, you still pay the full lead fee
Increasing costs: Lead prices have risen 2-3x since Thumbtack's launch as they squeeze more revenue per transaction
Cancel Thumbtack Pro Account
Step 1: Turn Off Auto-Targeting (Stop New Charges)
Log into your Thumbtack Pro account
Go to Settings โ Preferences
Turn OFF "Instant Match" and any auto-targeting settings
Set your max weekly budget to $0
This stops new lead charges immediately
Step 2: Delete Your Pro Profile
Go to Settings โ Account
Click "Deactivate" or "Delete account"
Confirm deletion
Remove your payment method before deleting (Settings โ Payment โ Remove card)
Step 3: Contact Support (If Needed)
If you can't find the delete option: email support@thumbtack.com or use in-app help chat. Request account deletion, removal from search results, and removal of your payment information. Ask for written confirmation.
โ ๏ธ Check for Pending Charges
Thumbtack may have pending lead charges that haven't been billed yet. Check your billing history before deleting your account. If you see charges for leads that were clearly fake or unresponsive, request a lead credit before closing the account โ it's much harder to dispute after deletion.
Delete Customer Account
If you used Thumbtack to find a contractor and want to delete your customer account:
Log into thumbtack.com
Go to Account Settings
Click "Delete my account"
Confirm (this removes your project history and reviews)
Better Alternatives for Finding Home Services
For Customers
Nextdoor: Free. Neighbors recommend local contractors they've actually used. Most trusted source for home services.
Google Maps reviews: Search "[service] near me" and check reviews. Direct contact with the business, no middleman markup.
Angi (Angie's List): More established review platform with verified reviews. Free for customers.
Facebook local groups: "[Your City] Home Services" groups โ real recommendations from real neighbors.
For Pros
Google Business Profile: Free. Shows up in local searches. Customers contact you directly โ no lead fees.
Nextdoor Business: Free listing plus optional advertising. Lower cost per acquisition than Thumbtack.
Word of mouth + referral bonuses: Give existing customers $25-50 for referrals. Higher conversion rate than any platform lead.
Yelp (free tier): Claim your profile, get reviews, and respond to customers. Paid Yelp ads are controversial but the free listing works.
๐ Home Service Subscriptions Add Up
Thumbtack leads, Angi memberships, home warranties, lawn care subscriptions, cleaning services โ homeowners average $200-400/month in recurring home costs. JustCancel scans your bank statement to surface every charge so you can see the full picture.
