How to Cancel Teachable in 2026 (Creator vs Student — Different Processes)
Teachable serves two audiences — course creators (who pay Teachable for the platform) and students (who pay creators for courses). Cancellation is completely different for each. Here's both.
For Course Creators: Cancel Your Teachable Plan
Teachable plans range from $39-$199/month (or $228-$1188/year). To cancel:
- Log in at app.teachable.com
- Go to Settings → Billing
- Click Cancel Plan or Downgrade
- Click through the retention offer (they'll try to keep you)
- Confirm cancellation
🚨 Annual Plans Are Non-Refundable
If you're on an annual plan, Teachable does not offer prorated refunds. Your access continues until the annual period ends, but you won't get money back for unused months. This is a major gotcha if you signed up for the annual discount.
Before Canceling: Export Your Data
Don't lose your course content and student data:
- Course content: Download all videos, PDFs, and materials you uploaded. Teachable doesn't host them after cancellation.
- Student list: Export your student emails (Settings → Users → Export)
- Sales data: Export transaction history for tax records
- Custom domain: Point your domain DNS elsewhere before canceling
What Happens to Your School After Canceling
- Your school reverts to Teachable's free plan (limited features, higher transaction fees)
- Existing students can still access courses they purchased
- You can still accept new enrollments (with higher transaction fees on free plan)
- Custom domain, advanced features, and integrations are removed
- Your school URL (yourschool.teachable.com) stays active
For Students: Cancel a Course Subscription or Get a Refund
If you bought a course on a Teachable-hosted school:
- Teachable doesn't process student refunds — the course creator handles refunds
- Contact the course creator directly through their website or email
- Check the creator's refund policy (usually on their sales page)
- Most creators offer 30-day money-back guarantees, but it's not required
If the creator won't refund and you believe it's fraud, contact your credit card company for a chargeback.
Cancel a Student Subscription (Recurring Course)
If you're on a monthly subscription to a course:
- Log in to the school where you purchased the course
- Go to your Account or Billing settings
- Find the subscription and click Cancel
- If no cancel option exists, contact the course creator
Alternatives for Course Creators
- Thinkific (free plan available) — similar features, free tier includes 1 course and unlimited students
- Podia ($39/month) — courses + digital downloads + community in one platform
- Kajabi ($149/month) — all-in-one (courses + email + website), more expensive but more features
- Gumroad (10% transaction fee, no monthly) — simplest option for selling courses, no monthly cost
- Udemy (free to create) — massive marketplace, but Udemy controls pricing and takes 63% on organic sales
The Real Cost Comparison
Teachable's pricing gets expensive fast:
- Free plan: $0/month + $1 + 10% per transaction
- Basic: $39/month + 5% transaction fee
- Pro: $119/month + 0% transaction fee
- Pro+: $199/month + 0% transaction fee
If you're making under $2,380/month in course sales, Basic plan's 5% fee actually costs less than the Pro plan's higher monthly fee. Do the math before upgrading.
🎯 Bottom Line
Creators: export your content and student list first, then cancel at Settings → Billing. Annual plans are non-refundable. Your school reverts to the free plan (not deleted). Students: contact the course creator for refunds — Teachable doesn't handle student billing.
