How to Cancel TaxAct Subscription in 2026
Last updated: February 2026 • Difficulty: Easy • Cost: Free–$90 per filing
How TaxAct Billing Works
Unlike most subscriptions, TaxAct isn't a recurring monthly charge. Here's the pricing structure:
- Free: Simple federal returns (W-2 income, standard deduction)
- Deluxe ($49.99): Itemized deductions, student loans, HSAs
- Premier ($69.99): Investments, rental income, foreign accounts
- Self-Employed ($89.99): 1099 income, business expenses, Schedule C
- State return: +$39.99 per state (each, not included)
- Xpert Help: +$59.99+ for on-demand tax expert access
You're charged when you click "File" — not before. But there are a couple ways unexpected charges happen.
Why You Might Be Getting Charged
- Xpert Help auto-added: TaxAct sometimes adds Xpert Help during the filing flow. If you didn't explicitly remove it, you might have paid $60+ extra.
- "Pay with refund" fee: If you chose to pay TaxAct from your tax refund instead of a credit card, there's an additional ~$25 processing fee.
- TaxAct+ subscription: Some users signed up for TaxAct+ (year-round access to prior returns and tax planning tools) without realizing it's a recurring charge.
Cancel TaxAct+ (Year-Round Service)
- Go to taxact.com and log in
- Go to My Account
- Find TaxAct+ or any active subscription
- Click Cancel
- Confirm cancellation
Delete Your TaxAct Account
If you want to fully remove your TaxAct account and all stored tax data:
- Log in to TaxAct
- Go to My Account → Account Settings
- Look for Delete Account
- If not available online, contact support at 1-319-373-3600
Before deleting, download PDFs of all your filed returns. You'll need them for future reference, loan applications, and potential audits (keep tax records for at least 7 years).
Cheaper Tax Filing Alternatives
- IRS Free File — completely free federal filing if income is under $84,000 (through IRS partner sites)
- FreeTaxUSA — free federal, $14.99 per state — cheaper than TaxAct for most situations
- Cash App Taxes — completely free federal + state (no catch, no income limits)
- IRS Direct File — free, directly from the IRS, available in growing number of states
- VITA — free in-person tax prep for income under $67,000 (volunteer program)
TaxAct vs. TurboTax
TaxAct is the budget alternative to TurboTax, typically $20-50 cheaper per tier. But FreeTaxUSA is even cheaper than TaxAct — free federal filing with $14.99 state returns versus TaxAct's $40+ state fee. For simple returns, there's no reason to pay more than $15 total.
