How to Cancel Squarespace (2026 Guide) — Export Your Site Before You Lose Everything
Updated 2026-02-28 · 5 min read
Squarespace plans range from $16 to $65/month — up to $780/year for the Commerce Advanced plan. Unlike Wix, Squarespace does allow content export, so you can actually leave. But you need to do it right. Here's the complete guide to canceling and migrating your site.
Step 1: Export Your Content FIRST
📦 Before Canceling — Do This
Go to Settings → Advanced → Import/Export
Click Export — this creates an XML file with your pages, blog posts, and content
Download all images separately (export doesn't include media files)
Export products if using Squarespace Commerce (CSV format)
Transfer your domain to another registrar (Namecheap, Cloudflare)
Save your analytics — Squarespace analytics are deleted after cancellation
Monthly plans: Cancel anytime, site goes offline at end of billing period
Annual plans: Cancel anytime, but no prorated refund. Site stays live until the end of your annual period
14-day refund window: Annual plans can get a full refund within 14 days of purchase/renewal
Domain Transfer
If you registered your domain through Squarespace (or they migrated it from Google Domains):
Go to Settings → Domains
Click your domain → Transfer domain away
Unlock the domain and get the authorization code
Transfer to Cloudflare ($0 markup), Namecheap, or Porkbun
Wait 5-7 days for transfer to complete BEFORE canceling Squarespace
🚨 Google Domains Migration
Squarespace acquired all Google Domains in 2023. If you had a domain with Google Domains, it's now with Squarespace. You can transfer it out — but do it BEFORE canceling your Squarespace account.
Cheaper Alternatives
Carrd — $19/YEAR for simple one-page sites. Perfect for portfolios, landing pages
WordPress.com (free) — full CMS, free hosting, exportable
Ghost — $9/month, built for blogs and newsletters
Framer — free tier, modern design, can export code
Notion + Super.so — write in Notion, publish as site, $12/month
GitHub Pages — free hosting for static sites (technical users)
After Cancellation
Your site content is preserved for 30 days after cancellation (accessible if you resubscribe). After 30 days, it's permanently deleted. If you're unsure, export everything before canceling — you can always reimport later.
