How to Cancel Squarespace Website Subscription (2026 Guide)
Updated 2026-02-17 · 5 min read
Squarespace costs $16-$52/month ($192-$624/year) for website hosting. Many people build a personal site, portfolio, or side-project landing page, stop updating it after a month, and keep paying for years. Here's how to cancel — and what happens to your site.
⚠️ Your Site Goes Down Immediately
Unlike most subscriptions, canceling Squarespace immediately unpublishes your website at the end of your billing period. Your content stays in your account for 30 days, but after that it may be deleted. Export your content before canceling.
Step 1: Export Your Content (Do This First!)
In your Squarespace dashboard, go to Settings → Advanced → Import/Export
Click Export — this gives you your blog posts and pages in XML format
Download any images separately (they're not included in the XML export)
If you have an online store, export products from Commerce → Products → Export
Save your custom CSS/code if you added any
Step 2: Transfer Your Domain (If Applicable)
If you bought your domain through Squarespace:
Go to Settings → Domains
Click your domain → Transfer domain away
Transfer to a registrar like Cloudflare (cheapest renewals), Namecheap, or Google Domains
Domain transfers take 5-7 days — start this before canceling your site
Annual plan, within 14 days: Full refund (minus domain cost if registered) ✅
Monthly plan: No refund — cancels at end of billing period ❌
After 14 days (annual): No refund ❌
Domain registration: Non-refundable (domains can be transferred)
Free and Cheaper Alternatives
WordPress.com (free tier) — Free with yoursite.wordpress.com subdomain. Paid plans start at $4/month.
Carrd.co — $19/year for a simple one-page site. Perfect for portfolios and landing pages.
Google Sites — Completely free, good enough for personal/portfolio sites
Notion + Super.so — Write in Notion, publish as a website ($12/month)
GitHub Pages — Free static site hosting (requires some technical skill)
Netlify / Vercel — Free tier for static sites and simple web apps
💰 The Real Question
Is your Squarespace site actively generating revenue, leads, or traffic? If not, you're paying $16-52/month for a digital business card. A free Carrd.co site or LinkedIn profile does the same job for $0-$19/year.
🔍 Website Subscriptions Add Up
Squarespace + domain renewal + email hosting + Mailchimp + plugins... a "simple website" can cost $50-$100/month. Upload your bank statement to JustCancel to find all your website-related charges.
