How to Cancel Square POS & Payments (2026 Guide)

💡 You might not need to cancel: Square's basic POS is free — you only pay per transaction (2.6% + $0.10). If you're on a paid plan (Plus, Premium), you can downgrade to Free instead of canceling entirely.

Cancel a Paid Subscription (Square Plus/Premium)

Sign in at squareup.com/dashboard
Go to Account & Settings → Subscriptions
Find the subscription you want to cancel (Appointments, Invoices, Online, etc.)
Click Cancel Subscription
Confirm — you downgrade to the free version of that feature

Close Your Square Account Entirely

Transfer any remaining balance to your bank account
Cancel all active subscriptions first
Go to Account & Settings → Business Information
Scroll to Deactivate Account
Confirm — this is permanent and deletes your data

⚠️ Before closing: Download transaction history, customer data, and tax documents. Once deactivated, you lose access to reporting for tax purposes.
