Spotify Premium is now $11.99/month ($18.99 for Duo, $19.99 for Family) — that's $143.88/year. The price was $9.99 for over a decade until 2023, then increased three times in two years. If the free tier works for you (same music library, just with ads and shuffle-only on mobile), here's how to downgrade and save $144/year.
Spotify kept prices at $9.99 from 2011 to 2023 — then raised to $10.99 (Jul 2023), then $11.99 (Jun 2024), with another increase expected. Family plan went from $15.99 to $19.99 — a 25% increase. The pattern is clear: prices will keep going up.
Spotify does not allow cancellation through the mobile app. You must use a web browser on your phone or computer. This is a deliberate friction point — they know most people use the app and might give up if they can't find the cancel button.
If you subscribed via the App Store:
What you lose: No offline downloads, ads every few songs, mobile is shuffle-only (can't pick specific songs), lower audio quality (128kbps vs 320kbps)
Before canceling, save your playlists: Go to spotify.com/account/privacy → Download your data. This exports your playlists, streaming history, and library. You can then import playlists to another service using free tools like Soundiiz or TuneMyMusic.
