How to Cancel Sezzle in 2026 (Close Account + Stop BNPL Payments)
Updated 2026-02-26 ยท 6 min read
๐ฐ The BNPL Debt Spiral
Sezzle lets you "pay in 4" interest-free installments โ sounds great until you stack 5-10 orders and suddenly owe hundreds across overlapping payment schedules. 76% of BNPL users report spending more than they would have without the option (Federal Reserve, 2025). Sezzle also charges $10 rescheduling fees for late payments and reports to credit bureaus, meaning missed payments can damage your credit score. If BNPL is encouraging overspending, deleting the account is the fix.
Step 1: Pay Off All Outstanding Orders
You cannot close your Sezzle account while you have outstanding balances:
Open the Sezzle app or go to dashboard.sezzle.com
Check My Orders for any active payment plans
For each order, you can pay off the remaining balance early โ no penalty for early payment
Click Pay Now on each remaining installment
Wait for all payments to process and show as completed
๐ก Pay Early to Stop the Cycle
Sezzle doesn't charge early repayment fees. If you have 3 remaining installments of $25, you can pay all $75 now and be done. This stops the bi-weekly automatic charges and clears the way to close your account.
Step 2: Cancel Sezzle Premium (If Applicable)
Sezzle Premium costs $4.99/month and offers waived rescheduling fees, increased spending power, and exclusive deals. Cancel this first:
Go to Settings โ Sezzle Premium in the app
Click Cancel Premium
If you subscribed through the App Store or Google Play, cancel through your device's subscription settings instead
Access continues until the end of the current billing period
Step 3: Remove Payment Methods
Go to Settings โ Payment Methods
Remove all linked debit cards and bank accounts
This prevents any future charges even if account closure is delayed
Step 4: Close Your Account
Email support@sezzle.com with the subject "Account Closure Request"
Include your full name, email address, and phone number associated with the account
State: "I request that my Sezzle account be permanently closed and all personal data deleted per applicable data protection laws"
Alternatively, use the in-app chat or call 1-888-540-1867
Sezzle should process the closure within 5-7 business days
Request confirmation email when the account is fully closed
What Happens to Your Data
Transaction history: Sezzle retains financial records for regulatory compliance (typically 7 years)
Credit reporting: Any payment history already reported to credit bureaus remains on your credit report
Personal data: Request deletion under CCPA (California) or your state's privacy law
Sezzle Virtual Card: If you set up a Sezzle virtual card, it's deactivated when the account closes
Breaking the BNPL Habit
If BNPL has become a spending problem, closing Sezzle is step one. Also consider:
Close ALL BNPL accounts: Afterpay, Klarna, Affirm, Zip โ close them all. Each one is a temptation vector
Delete the apps: Out of sight, out of mind. Remove Sezzle from your phone
Remove saved cards from retailers: Friction prevents impulse buying
Use the 24-hour rule: Wait 24 hours before any non-essential purchase
Track spending: Use a budgeting app (YNAB, Monarch Money) to see where money actually goes
๐ธ The Real Cost of "Pay in 4"
BNPL services are technically interest-free, but the real cost is overspending. Studies show BNPL users spend 30-50% more per transaction than they would paying upfront. If BNPL causes you to buy a $200 item you wouldn't have bought for $200 cash, the "interest-free" financing cost you $200. The best financial tool is the one that helps you spend less, not more.
Sezzle vs. Other BNPL Services
Sezzle: 4 payments over 6 weeks, $10 rescheduling fee, reports to credit bureaus
Afterpay: 4 payments over 6 weeks, $8 late fee, doesn't report to bureaus (yet)
Klarna: 4 payments over 6 weeks OR monthly financing, reports to bureaus for some products
Affirm: 3-60 month terms, may charge interest (0-36% APR), reports to bureaus
Best option: None of them. Use a credit card with purchase protection and pay it off monthly, or just buy what you can afford today
