Cancel Planet Fitness 2026: The $10/Month Gym That Charges $58 to Cancel
Updated 2026-03-02 • 7 min read
🏋️ Planet Fitness's business model depends on people NOT going to the gym. Their CEO has admitted they have 6,500 members per location but only room for 300 at a time. They make money from non-attendance — and make canceling deliberately difficult.
How to Cancel Planet Fitness
There are only 2 ways to cancel. Phone and email do NOT work:
Method 1: In Person (Fastest)
- Go to your home club (the specific location you signed up at)
- Go to the front desk during staffed hours
- Ask for a cancellation form
- Fill it out and submit it
- Get a copy of the form and confirmation number
- Note: You must cancel by the 10th of the month to avoid being charged for the following month
Method 2: Certified Letter
- Write a cancellation letter including: full name, address, phone, birthdate, Planet Fitness membership ID
- Send via certified mail with return receipt to your home club's address
- Keep the certified mail receipt as proof
- Same 10th-of-month deadline applies
💡 FTC Click-to-Cancel Rule: As of 2024, the FTC requires companies to make cancellation as easy as signup. Planet Fitness still requires in-person visits or certified mail. If you encounter resistance, cite this rule: "I'm invoking the FTC Click-to-Cancel rule and requesting immediate cancellation."
The Hidden Costs of "$10/Month"
- Monthly fee: $10/month (Classic) or $24.99/month (PF Black Card)
- Annual enhancement fee: $49/year — charged once per year, often a surprise
- Startup fee: $1-49 depending on promotions
- Cancellation fee: $58 if within commitment period (12 months)
- Real annual cost (Classic): $10 × 12 + $49 = $169/year — not the $120 you expected
- Real annual cost (Black Card): $24.99 × 12 + $49 = $349/year
When's the Best Time to Cancel?
- After your 12-month commitment: Avoids the $58 cancellation fee
- Before the 10th of the month: Prevents next month's charge
- Before the annual fee date: Check your agreement for when the $49 annual fee hits — cancel before it
- Right now if you haven't gone in 30+ days: Every month you delay costs $10-25
Free and Cheaper Alternatives
- YouTube fitness: THOUSANDS of free full workouts (Fitness Blender, POPSUGAR, Yoga with Adriene)
- Apple Fitness+ (free trial): Included free for 3 months with new Apple devices
- Outdoor exercise: Running, walking, cycling, calisthenics parks — all free
- Community centers: Many offer gym access for $5-15/month, no contracts
- Home equipment: A set of resistance bands ($20-30) and a yoga mat ($15) replaces 80% of gym exercises
🏋️ Gym memberships are the #1 subscription people pay for but don't use. The average gym member goes 1.5 times per week — but 67% go fewer than 4 times per month. Upload your bank statement to find every fitness subscription you're paying for.
