How to Cancel PayPal Recurring Payments & Subscriptions (2026)
Updated February 2026 · Find and stop every automatic payment
Why this matters: PayPal stores "billing agreements" that let merchants charge you automatically — even for services you cancelled directly. If you cancelled a service but are still being charged via PayPal, you need to cancel the PayPal billing agreement too.
Find All Your Recurring Payments
- Go to paypal.com/myaccount/autopay
- Log in to your PayPal account
- You'll see a list of all pre-approved payments (active and inactive)
- Review each one — you may find services you forgot about
Cancel a Specific Recurring Payment
- On the autopay page, find the merchant/service
- Click on it to see details
- Click Cancel or Cancel automatic payments
- Confirm — PayPal immediately blocks the merchant from charging you
- You'll see the status change to "Cancelled"
✅ This is instant and powerful
Unlike cancelling with the service directly (where they might "forget" or delay), cancelling a PayPal billing agreement immediately prevents the merchant from pulling money. They can't override this.
Cancel in the PayPal App
- Open the PayPal app
- Tap the gear icon (Settings)
- Tap Payments
- Tap Manage automatic payments
- Select the merchant and tap Cancel
Common Services Using PayPal Billing
These services commonly use PayPal as a payment method and may have active billing agreements:
- Spotify, YouTube Premium, Hulu
- eBay, Etsy stores
- Adobe Creative Cloud
- Twitch subscriptions
- Discord Nitro
- Various VPNs and hosting services
- Subscription box services
What If You're Still Being Charged?
- Check that you cancelled the PayPal agreement (not just the service). Both need to be cancelled.
- Dispute the charge: PayPal → Resolution Center → Report a Problem → "Unauthorized charge"
- Remove funding sources: As a last resort, remove your bank account and cards from PayPal so nothing can be charged
Cancel Your PayPal Account Entirely
If you want to close PayPal completely:
- Cancel ALL automatic payments first
- Withdraw any PayPal balance to your bank
- Go to Settings → Account → Close Account
- Confirm — this is permanent
