How to Cancel Oscar Health Insurance (2026 Guide)

Updated February 2026 • ACA marketplace rules apply • Call or online

⚠️ Important: Oscar Health is ACA marketplace insurance. You can't just cancel anytime — federal rules restrict when you can drop health insurance. Read the enrollment rules below before doing anything.

When You Can Cancel Oscar Health

ACA health insurance has specific cancellation windows:

  • Open Enrollment (Nov 1 - Jan 15): Cancel or switch plans freely for next year
  • Qualifying Life Event (QLE): Marriage, divorce, birth/adoption, job loss, moving to a new state, losing other coverage — triggers a 60-day Special Enrollment Period
  • Any time: You can technically cancel mid-year, but you may face tax penalties and coverage gaps

How to Cancel

Option 1: Through Healthcare.gov (If Enrolled via Marketplace)

  1. Log in at healthcare.gov
  2. Go to your application → "Report a life change" or "End coverage"
  3. Select the plan to end and the effective date
  4. Confirm — your Oscar coverage will end on the date you select

This is the most reliable method if you enrolled through the federal marketplace.

Option 2: Call Oscar Directly

  1. Call 1-855-672-2755 (Mon-Fri 8am-8pm ET)
  2. Say you want to cancel your plan
  3. They'll verify your identity and explain your options
  4. Confirm the cancellation date — typically end of current month

Option 3: Stop Paying (Not Recommended)

If you stop paying premiums, Oscar will terminate your plan after the grace period (usually 90 days if you receive subsidies, 30 days if you don't). This is risky — you'll owe back premiums for the grace period and any claims during that time may be reversed.

What Happens After Cancellation

  • Coverage ends: Typically at the end of the month you cancel
  • Premium subsidies stop: Any tax credits end with your coverage
  • No refunds: ACA premiums are paid monthly — no pro-rated refunds
  • Tax implications: You may need to reconcile premium tax credits on your tax return
  • COBRA not applicable: Oscar is individual insurance, not employer-sponsored

Before You Cancel: Important Considerations

🏥 Coverage Gap Risk: Being uninsured in the US means one ER visit could cost $5,000-$50,000+. Even a "simple" broken arm is $2,500+. Make sure you have alternative coverage before canceling.
  • Employer coverage available? If you or a spouse has employer insurance, that's usually cheaper
  • Medicaid eligible? If income dropped, you may qualify for free coverage
  • Short-term health insurance: Cheaper but doesn't cover pre-existing conditions
  • Health sharing ministries: Not insurance, but some use them as alternatives

Oscar vs. Other ACA Plans

Before canceling entirely, consider switching to a cheaper plan:

  • Bronze plans: Lowest premiums ($200-300/mo), highest deductibles — good if you rarely see a doctor
  • Catastrophic plans: Available if under 30 or have a hardship exemption — cheapest option
  • Other insurers: Blue Cross, Aetna, Ambetter, Molina — compare on healthcare.gov

Oscar's monthly cost (~$400/mo avg) is high. Many people find 20-40% savings by switching plans during open enrollment without losing coverage.
