How to Cancel Mixpanel in 2026 — Downgrade to Free + Export Event Data
Last updated: February 2026 • Difficulty: Easy
✅ Good news: Mixpanel has one of the most generous free tiers in analytics — 20 million events per month. Most companies paying for Mixpanel Growth ($20-28/month) don't even use enough data to exceed the free tier. Check before you cancel completely.
Do You Actually Need to Cancel?
Check your usage first — you might already qualify for free:
- Free tier: 20M events/month — handles most small-to-medium apps
- Growth plan: Starts at $20/month — adds group analytics, data modeling, unlimited saved reports
- Enterprise: Custom pricing — advanced governance, SSO, data pipelines
- Go to Organization Settings → Plan & Billing → Usage to check your monthly events
Option 1: Downgrade to Free
- Go to Organization Settings → Plan & Billing
- Click Manage Plan → Downgrade to Free
- You keep: core analytics, funnels, retention, flows, unlimited history
- You lose: group analytics, data modeling, unlimited cohorts (limited to 5)
- Downgrade takes effect at end of current billing cycle
Option 2: Cancel Completely
- First, export your data (see below)
- Remove the Mixpanel SDK from your codebase
- Go to Organization Settings → Plan & Billing → Cancel Subscription
- For Enterprise contracts: email your account manager with 30-day notice
- Delete your organization: Organization Settings → Delete Organization
Export Your Data First
- Raw data export: Use the Export API —
GET /api/2.0/export returns JSON events - Dashboard exports: Each report has a CSV export button
- Cohort exports: Export user cohorts as CSV from the cohorts page
- Mixpanel to warehouse: Use the data pipeline feature to dump to BigQuery/Snowflake before canceling
- Screenshot key dashboards: Retention curves, funnels, and flow diagrams
Free Alternatives (If Free Tier Isn't Enough)
- PostHog: 1M events/month free, open-source, includes session replay + feature flags + surveys
- Amplitude Starter: 50M events/month free — even more generous than Mixpanel for event volume
- Google Analytics 4: Free, unlimited events — less product-focused but free forever
- Plausible: $9/month — simpler but privacy-focused
- Umami: Free, self-hosted, open-source
💡 Pro tip: If you're on Growth plan just for group analytics, consider tracking group properties as user properties instead. It's a workaround that keeps you on the free tier for most B2B analytics needs.
