๐ Metromile Was Acquired by Lemonade
Lemonade acquired Metromile in 2022 and has been migrating policies. If you're still seeing "Metromile" charges, your policy may now be administered by Lemonade. Check your email for migration notices. If you never received one, your policy may have been automatically renewed under the Lemonade umbrella.
Metromile pioneered pay-per-mile car insurance: a low base rate ($30-50/month) plus a per-mile charge (2-6 cents/mile). For low-mileage drivers (under 8,000 miles/year), this was genuinely cheaper than traditional insurance. But several problems emerged:
โ ๏ธ Return the Pulse Device
Metromile's OBD Pulse device tracks your mileage and reports it for billing. After canceling, unplug the device and return it. Metromile may charge a device fee ($50-100) if not returned within 30 days. They should send a prepaid shipping label โ if they don't, email support and request one.
If you drive less than 10,000 miles/year, you have better options than Metromile:
At 5,000 miles/year with Metromile's typical pricing:
Compare that to a low-mileage quote from GEICO ($500-700/year for similar coverage) and the savings evaporate. Pay-per-mile only truly wins at under 3,000 miles/year โ which describes people who barely drive at all.
