Metro by T-Mobile (formerly MetroPCS) is T-Mobile's prepaid brand, offering plans from $30-60/month on the same T-Mobile 5G network. While it's a decent budget option, Metro customers often get lower data priority than direct T-Mobile customers, which means slower speeds during peak times. If you're paying $50-60/month for Metro, you're in direct T-Mobile postpaid territory.
Metro is prepaid — there's no contract. If you don't port your number and simply stop paying, your service ends when your current billing period expires. Metro keeps your number for about 60 days before releasing it. If you might want the number later, port it out first.
You can cancel at any Metro by T-Mobile store in person. Bring your ID and phone. The store associate can help you get your account info for porting if you're switching carriers.
Same T-Mobile network, often cheaper:
Metro-purchased phones are locked for 180 days from activation. After 180 days with active service, you can request an unlock. Since Metro uses T-Mobile's network, an unlocked Metro phone works on any T-Mobile MVNO (Mint, US Mobile, etc.) and usually works on AT&T as well. Contact Metro customer service at 611 to request your unlock.
