How to Cancel Metro by T-Mobile in 2026
Updated February 2026 • Difficulty: Easy • Prepaid — no contract
✅ Good news: Metro is prepaid. No contracts, no early termination fees, no cancellation hoops.
⚠️ Port Your Number First (Critical)
If you want to keep your phone number, you must port it to your new carrier before cancelling Metro. Once you cancel, your number is released and you cannot get it back. Ever.
To port, you'll need your Metro account number (found in the myMetro app) and your PIN or last 4 of SSN. Start the port process with your new carrier — they'll handle the rest.
Option 1: Just Stop Paying (Easiest)
Metro is prepaid. If you don't pay your next bill, service simply ends when your current period expires. No penalties, no collections, no nothing. Your number will be held for about 60 days before being recycled.
This is the laziest cancellation method — and it works perfectly. Just make sure you've ported your number first if you want to keep it.
Option 2: Visit a Metro Store
Walk into any Metro by T-Mobile store and tell them you want to cancel. They'll process it on the spot. Bring your phone and a valid ID. You might get a retention offer — ignore it if you've already decided.
Option 3: Call 1-888-863-8768
Call Metro customer service at 1-888-863-8768 (1-888-8METRO8). Tell the rep you want to cancel your line. Have your PIN ready. This takes about 5-10 minutes.
No Refunds on Prepaid
Since you've already paid for your current billing period, there are no prorated refunds. Your service continues until the end of the paid period regardless of when you cancel. Time your cancellation to the end of your billing cycle to get the most out of what you've already paid.
What About Device Payments?
If you bought a phone through Metro on a payment plan, cancelling your line doesn't erase the remaining balance. You'll need to pay off the device in full. Also, Metro phones are typically locked — you'll need 180 days of active service before they'll unlock it for use on another carrier.
Better Alternatives
- Mint Mobile — $15/mo for 5GB, uses T-Mobile's network (same towers)
- Visible — $25/mo unlimited on Verizon's network
- US Mobile — $10-25/mo, choose between T-Mobile or Verizon network
- Google Fi — $20/mo base, flexible data pricing
💡 Tip: Most Metro customers pay $30-60/month. Switching to Mint Mobile or US Mobile can save you $10-30/month with the same T-Mobile network coverage. That's $120-360/year.
