Mercari is free to use — there is no subscription to cancel. But if you want to fully delete your account and data, you need to go through a specific process. Most importantly: withdraw your balance first or you lose it.
Email contact@mercari.com from the email address associated with your account. Subject line: "Account Deletion Request." Include your username and state that you want your account permanently deleted. They typically process it within 5-7 business days.
Per their privacy policy, Mercari retains certain data for legal and compliance reasons even after account deletion. Transaction records, tax reporting data (1099-K), and fraud prevention data may be kept for up to 7 years. This is standard for financial platforms and required by IRS regulations.
Since Mercari is free, there is no financial cost to keeping a dormant account. If you might sell or buy things in the future, consider just removing your payment information and delisting your items instead of full deletion. You lose nothing by keeping it inactive. The main reasons to fully delete: privacy concerns, data minimization, or avoiding the temptation to buy.
If you sold more than $600 on Mercari in a calendar year, Mercari is required to issue a 1099-K form for tax reporting. Make sure you download your transaction history before deleting your account. If it is January-April and you have not received your 1099-K yet, wait until after tax season to delete.
