How to Cancel IXL Learning 2026 — Is $10-20/Month for Math Practice Worth It?
Updated March 2026 • 5 min read
IXL Learning is one of the most popular K-12 practice platforms, charging $10-20/month per subject. Many parents sign up because their school uses IXL — then discover they're paying for something their kid only uses when forced to. Meanwhile, Khan Academy covers the same material for free.
IXL Pricing
- Single subject (monthly): $9.95/month
- All subjects (monthly): $19.95/month
- Single subject (annual): $79/year ($6.58/month)
- All subjects (annual): $159/year ($13.25/month)
- Family plan (multiple children): Additional child at discounted rate
That's up to $240/year for practice problems. If your school provides free IXL access, you definitely don't need a personal subscription.
⚠️ Check with your school first: Many schools and districts have IXL site licenses. Your child may already have free access through their school account. Check with their teacher before paying for a personal subscription.

Why IXL Isn't Worth Paying For
- Khan Academy is free: Same K-12 subjects, video lessons (not just practice), progress tracking — all $0
- Repetitive practice format: IXL is essentially infinite worksheets online — engaging for some kids, soul-crushing for others
- SmartScore frustration: IXL's scoring penalizes wrong answers harshly, which can discourage struggling students
- No video instruction: IXL is practice-only — if your kid doesn't understand a concept, there's no lesson to watch
- School access may be free: Many kids already have access through their school's license
Free Alternatives That Are Just as Good (or Better)
- Khan Academy: Free forever. Math, science, reading, writing, history — all with video lessons + practice. The gold standard
- Khan Academy Kids: Free app for ages 2-8 (pre-K through 2nd grade)
- Prodigy Math: Free math game for grades 1-8 (premium is $8/month but free tier works fine)
- Desmos: Free graphing calculator and interactive math activities
- ChatGPT/Claude for tutoring: Free AI tutoring for homework help — explains concepts step by step
- Your local library: Many libraries offer free access to learning platforms like Tutor.com
💡 The ChatGPT homework helper: For $0, your kid can ask ChatGPT or Claude to explain any math concept step by step, generate practice problems at their level, and check their work with explanations. This is arguably more effective than IXL's repetitive practice format — and it's free.
