Hippo is a modern homeowners insurance company with an easy cancellation process. But homeowners insurance is different from most subscriptions — if you have a mortgage, your lender is involved. Cancel wrong and your lender buys force-placed insurance at 3-5x the cost. Here is the right way to do it.
🚨 Do NOT cancel Hippo without replacement coverage. If you have a mortgage, your lender requires continuous homeowners insurance. A gap — even one day — triggers force-placed insurance that costs $2,000-5,000/year for minimal coverage. Get your new policy effective BEFORE your Hippo policy ends.
Two options:
When you call or email, have your policy number, desired cancellation date, and new insurer details ready. Hippo will process the cancellation and send confirmation.
If your homeowners insurance is paid through escrow (most mortgages):
Most mortgage companies have an insurance department that handles this. Call the number on your mortgage statement and ask for insurance/escrow.
Hippo provides a pro-rated refund for any unused premium. If you paid annually and cancel 6 months in, you get roughly half back (minus any short-rate penalty, which Hippo generally does not charge). The refund goes back to whoever paid — either you or your mortgage escrow account. Expect the refund within 15-30 days.
Some Hippo policies include a free smart home monitoring kit (water leak sensors, motion detector, etc.). When you cancel, Hippo may or may not ask for it back — check your policy terms. Most customers report keeping the kit after cancellation. The devices work independently of your Hippo policy.
