Grasshopper charges $14/month for True Solo, $25/month for Solo Plus, $44/month for Partner, or $80/month for Small Business. It gives you a virtual business phone number that rings on your cell phone. Useful concept — but Google Voice does it for $10/month or even free.
⚠️ Phone-only cancellation: Grasshopper does not allow online cancellation. You must call during business hours (Monday-Friday). This is a dark pattern — cite the FTC Click-to-Cancel rule if they resist.
Before switching to a cheaper alternative, ask: do you actually need a separate business number? Many freelancers and small business owners set up Grasshopper "just in case" and rarely get calls. If most of your business communication happens over email, Slack, or text, you might not need a virtual phone at all. Try going without it for a month — you might not miss it.
Google Voice Personal is completely free and gives you everything most solopreneurs need: a US phone number, voicemail transcription, call forwarding to your cell, and texts. The main limitation is no auto-attendant ("Press 1 for sales...") — for that, you need Google Voice for Business at $10/month. Still 30-70% cheaper than Grasshopper.
Bottom line: Grasshopper pioneered virtual business numbers but hasn't innovated since. Google Voice (free or $10/month) does the same thing. Port your number, call to cancel, and save $168-960/year.
