How to Cancel Google Fi 2026 — Port Your Number and Save on Phone Service
Updated March 2026 • 7 min read
Google Fi launched as "Project Fi" in 2015 with a genuinely innovative idea: pay only for the data you use, switch between T-Mobile and US Cellular towers automatically, and get international coverage at no extra cost. But in 2026, Fi's pricing is no longer competitive. At $20-65/month, cheaper options from Mint Mobile, Visible, and US Mobile offer the same or better service for less.
How to Cancel Google Fi
⚠️ IMPORTANT: Port your number BEFORE canceling! If you cancel first, you may lose your phone number permanently. Start by signing up with your new carrier and requesting a port — this automatically cancels your Fi service once the port completes.
Method 1: Port Your Number Out (Recommended)
- Choose your new carrier and sign up
- When asked, select "transfer existing number"
- You'll need your Google Fi account number (find in Fi app → Account → Account info)
- Your transfer PIN (Fi app → Account → Privacy & security → Transfer PIN)
- The new carrier handles the rest — your Fi account auto-cancels when the port completes
- This takes 1-3 business days
Method 2: Cancel Without Porting (Lose Your Number)
- Open the Google Fi app or go to fi.google.com
- Go to Account → Manage plan
- Select Cancel service
- Follow the prompts to confirm
- Your number is released — you cannot recover it
Google Fi's Device Payment Trap
If you bought a phone through Google Fi's financing, the remaining balance is due immediately upon cancellation. Many Fi customers don't realize this until they see a large charge. Additionally, if you received a promotional credit (like "$200 off Pixel with new activation"), you may owe back the promo credit if you cancel within the required period (typically 90-120 days).
- Check your device payment balance in the Fi app before canceling
- Review any active promotional credits and their requirements
- If you're close to completing a promo period, it may be worth waiting
Google Fi Pricing vs. Alternatives
- Google Fi Simply Unlimited: $50/month (1 line) — T-Mobile/US Cellular network
- Google Fi Unlimited Plus: $65/month — adds 50GB hotspot, Google One storage
- Google Fi Flexible: $20/month + $10/GB — only good for extremely light users
Compare to:
- Mint Mobile: $15-30/month (prepaid annual) — T-Mobile network, same coverage
- Visible: $25-30/month — Verizon network, unlimited everything, no annual commitment
- US Mobile: $25-35/month — choice of Verizon or T-Mobile, customizable plans
- T-Mobile Essentials: $50/month for 1 line — same network Fi uses, direct from carrier
- Cricket Wireless: $30-55/month — AT&T network, reliable prepaid option
✅ Best switch for most Fi users: Mint Mobile at $15/month (annual plan) or $25/month (monthly). Same T-Mobile network as Fi, significantly cheaper, and they now support eSIM for easy setup. Annual savings switching from Fi Unlimited: $300-420/year.
When Google Fi Is Still Worth It
- Frequent international travelers: Fi includes data in 200+ countries at no extra cost — this is its killer feature
- Very light data users: The Flexible plan at $20 + $10/GB is cheapest if you use under 1GB/month on WiFi
- Google ecosystem users: Unlimited Plus includes 100GB Google One storage ($20/month value)
- Multi-line families: Fi's family plans become more competitive at 3+ lines
For everyone else: Google Fi's domestic service is simply overpriced for what you get. The same T-Mobile network is available through Mint Mobile for half the price.
