How to Cancel Global Entry 2026 — Or Why You Should Probably Keep It
Updated March 2026 • 5 min read
Global Entry is $100 for 5 years ($20/year) and includes TSA PreCheck. It doesn't auto-renew — when it expires, it just stops working. At $20/year, it's one of the cheapest and most useful "subscriptions" you can have. But if you're here, let me help you decide whether to renew.
💡 Bottom line: If you fly internationally even once every 5 years, keep Global Entry. For $22 more than TSA PreCheck alone, you get customs fast-track plus PreCheck. And most premium credit cards reimburse the $100 fee — making it effectively free.
Global Entry vs TSA PreCheck — Quick Comparison
- TSA PreCheck: $78/5 years — faster domestic security only
- Global Entry: $100/5 years — includes PreCheck + expedited customs for international arrivals
- Difference: $22 over 5 years ($4.40/year) for customs fast-track
For $4.40/year extra, you get customs fast-track at all US airports and many international airports. There's almost no reason to get PreCheck alone when Global Entry is just $22 more.
How to Renew Global Entry
- Log in at ttp.cbp.dhs.gov (Trusted Traveler Programs)
- Click Renew (available up to 12 months before expiration)
- Complete the form (shorter than initial application)
- Pay $100
- No interview needed for renewals in most cases — conditional approval takes 2-4 weeks
⚠️ Renew early: Start your renewal 6-12 months before expiration. Processing times have been 2-8 weeks in 2025-2026. If you let it expire, you may need a new interview appointment (which can have 3-6 month waits at some locations).
How to "Cancel" Global Entry
Global Entry doesn't auto-renew, so there's nothing to cancel. When your 5-year membership expires, it simply stops working. If you want to actively withdraw before expiration:
- Log in at ttp.cbp.dhs.gov
- Contact CBP through the portal
- Request membership withdrawal
There's no refund for unused time. Since it doesn't auto-renew, most people simply let it expire rather than actively canceling.
Credit Cards That Reimburse Global Entry
Many premium credit cards reimburse the $100 fee as a statement credit, making Global Entry effectively free:
- Chase Sapphire Reserve ($550/year card) — $100 Global Entry credit every 4 years
- Amex Platinum ($695/year card) — $100 Global Entry credit every 4.5 years
- Capital One Venture X ($395/year card) — $100 Global Entry credit every 4 years
- Citi Prestige ($495/year card) — $100 credit every 5 years
- US Bank Altitude Reserve ($400/year card) — $100 credit every 4 years
If you already have one of these cards, you're literally losing money by NOT having Global Entry — you're paying for the credit whether you use it or not.
When to NOT Renew Global Entry
- You never fly internationally: Just get TSA PreCheck for $78
- You fly less than once every 5 years: The $100 isn't worth it if you won't use it
- You don't have a passport: Global Entry requires a valid passport
- You have a criminal record: CBP can revoke membership — if denied, save the $100
