Free Military Record Sources
- National Archives (archives.gov, free): Request military service records directly — the original source for most of Fold3's data
- FamilySearch (free): Millions of military records, completely free, run by LDS Church
- Veterans History Project (loc.gov, free): Library of Congress collection of veteran interviews and documents
- Find a Grave (free): Military burial records and headstone photos
- Your local library: Many libraries offer free Ancestry.com (which includes Fold3) access in-branch
Most military records are public domain documents. Fold3 charges for convenient access to freely available government records. For one-time research, a single month is enough — don't let it auto-renew.
