How to Cancel Flywheel Hosting in 2026
Flywheel was acquired by WP Engine in 2019. If you're still on a Flywheel plan, you're now effectively a WP Engine customer. Plans start at $15/month โ here's how to cancel and move your WordPress site somewhere cheaper.
How to Cancel
- Log in at getflywheel.com or my.wpengine.com
- Go to Account settings
- Navigate to Billing
- Click Cancel Plan or Close Account
- If no cancel option exists online, contact support via chat or email
๐จ Migrate your site BEFORE canceling! When you cancel, your site goes offline. Back up everything first. Once your hosting account is closed, your files may be deleted permanently.
Migrate Your Site First
- Install All-in-One WP Migration or UpdraftPlus plugin on your WordPress site
- Create a full backup (files + database)
- Download the backup file to your computer
- Set up your new hosting account
- Install WordPress on the new host
- Import your backup using the same plugin
- Update your domain's DNS to point to the new host
- Wait 24-48 hours for DNS propagation
- Verify everything works, then cancel Flywheel
Cheaper WordPress Hosting Alternatives
Flywheel/WP Engine is managed WordPress hosting โ you pay a premium for WordPress-specific optimization and support. If you don't need that:
- Cloudways: $14/month, managed cloud hosting, great performance/price ratio
- Hetzner + RunCloud: ~$5-8/month total, excellent for developers
- SiteGround: $3-14/month, solid shared hosting with WordPress tools
- WordPress.com Business: $33/month but includes everything (hosting, domain, plugins)
- Vercel/Netlify + headless WP: For developers, potentially free tier
Do You Even Need WordPress?
Before migrating to another WordPress host, consider whether WordPress is still the right tool:
- Simple business site? Carrd ($19/year) or Google Sites (free)
- Portfolio? Squarespace ($16/mo) or Framer (free tier)
- Blog? Ghost ($9/mo), Substack (free), or Hashnode (free)
- E-commerce? Shopify ($39/mo) is simpler than WooCommerce for most stores
๐ก Bottom line: Managed WordPress hosting at $15+/month made sense in 2018. In 2026, VPS hosting with management panels offers the same performance at half the price, and many sites don't even need WordPress anymore.
