Cancel Facebook/Meta Ads 2026: Stop the Bleeding on Ad Spend You Forgot About
Updated 2026-03-02 โข 7 min read
๐ฅ Zombie ad spend is real: Meta makes it incredibly easy to boost a post and incredibly hard to verify it stopped running. Check your ad account NOW โ thousands of small businesses have $5-50/day campaigns they think ended but didn't.
Step 1: Find All Running Campaigns
- Go to business.facebook.com/adsmanager
- Click the Campaigns tab
- Filter by Status: Active
- Check ALL three levels: Campaigns, Ad Sets, and individual Ads
- An ad set can be active even if the campaign appears paused โ check each level
Step 2: Turn Off Everything
Stop Individual Campaigns
- In Ads Manager, select all campaigns
- Click the toggle switch next to each campaign to turn it OFF
- Or select all โ Pause from the action menu
- Do the same for Ad Sets and Ads tabs
Stop Boosted Posts (Often Forgotten)
- Go to your Facebook Page
- Click Ad Center (left sidebar)
- Look for any active boosted posts
- Click View Results โ Delete Boost on each
Step 3: Remove Your Payment Method
Even paused campaigns can be accidentally reactivated. Remove your card:
- Go to business.facebook.com/billing
- Click Payment Settings
- Remove all payment methods
- Meta may not let you remove the last method if you have outstanding balance โ pay it first
๐ก The "boost post" trap: When you boost a Facebook/Instagram post, Meta often sets it to run continuously or auto-suggests extending it. A $10 boost you thought was one-time can silently charge $10/day indefinitely. Always check Ad Center for active boosts.
Step 4: Check Instagram Ad Spend Too
Instagram ads run through the same Meta Ads Manager, but you can also promote posts directly from Instagram:
- Open Instagram โ go to your Professional Dashboard
- Tap Ad Tools or Promotions
- Check for any active promotions
- End all active promotions
Close Your Ad Account Entirely
If you're done with Meta advertising:
- Pay off any outstanding balance
- Turn off all campaigns
- Go to Ad Account Settings
- Click Deactivate Ad Account
- Note: This doesn't delete it โ Meta keeps it for reactivation
- Remove payment methods after deactivation
Common Surprise Charges
- "Meta Platforms" on bank statement: This is Facebook/Instagram ad charges
- Multiple small charges ($5-25): Meta bills incrementally, not at end of campaign
- Charges after pausing: There's a delay โ ads already served still get billed for up to 48 hours
- Charges from old business pages: If you had a business page years ago and boosted posts, check that account
Get a Refund
Meta generally doesn't refund ad spend (you "received" the impressions). However:
- Unauthorized charges: If your account was hacked, contact Meta support for a refund
- Technical errors: If ads ran after you turned them off, submit a billing dispute
- Credit card dispute: As a last resort, file a chargeback with your bank โ but Meta may disable your account
๐ Zombie ad campaigns are one of the most common surprise charges we find. Facebook, Google, LinkedIn, TikTok โ small business owners often have multiple platforms draining $50-500/month in forgotten ad spend. Upload your bank statement to find all of them.
