How to Cancel Evernote and Export Your Notes (2026 Guide)

Updated 2026-02-17 · 5 min read

Evernote costs $14.99/month ($129.99/year) for Personal or $17.99/month for Professional. Once the gold standard of note-taking, Evernote has lost users to free alternatives like Notion, Apple Notes, and Obsidian. Here's how to export your notes and cancel.

⚠️ Free Tier Is Now Nearly Useless

In 2023, Evernote gutted its free tier to 50 notes and 1 notebook. If you cancel Premium, your existing notes stay but become read-only once you're over the limit. You must export before canceling or risk losing access to your own notes.

Step 1: Export Your Notes (Do This First!)

  1. Open Evernote desktop app (web doesn't support full export)
  2. Select All Notes (Ctrl/Cmd + A to select all)
  3. Click File → Export Notes
  4. Choose ENEX format (compatible with most note apps)
  5. Save the .enex file — this is your backup

Step 2: Cancel Your Subscription

  1. Go to evernote.com/Settings
  2. Click Account SummaryManage Subscription
  3. Click Cancel Subscription
  4. Go through the retention offers and confirm
  5. Your Premium features stay active until the end of the billing period

💡 The Best Migration Path

Casual notes: Apple Notes (iPhone users) or Google Keep (Android) — both free, sync everywhere
Heavy note-taker: Notion (free, powerful, imports from Evernote natively)
Privacy-focused: Obsidian (free, your notes stay on your device, not the cloud)
All save you $130-$216/year over Evernote.
