How to Close Your Credit Karma Money Account in 2026
Credit Karma is 100% free — there's no premium subscription to cancel. But if you opened a Credit Karma Money checking or savings account and want to close it, or if you want to delete your Credit Karma account entirely, here's how.
Close Credit Karma Money (Checking/Savings)
- Transfer your balance out first — move all funds to your other bank account
- Go to creditkarma.com/myaccount
- Navigate to Credit Karma Money
- Select Close Account
- Confirm the closure
⚠️ Before closing: Make sure no direct deposits or autopay bills are connected to your Credit Karma Money account. Update those payment methods first.
If you run into issues with the online process, email memberservices@creditkarma.com to request account closure.
Delete Your Entire Credit Karma Account
If you want to remove your Credit Karma profile entirely (credit monitoring, tax filings, recommendations — everything):
- Log in at creditkarma.com
- Go to Settings → Account
- Scroll to Delete account
- Confirm — this is permanent
What You Lose When Deleting Credit Karma
- Free TransUnion and Equifax credit monitoring
- Credit score history and trends
- Any saved Credit Karma Tax returns (download them first!)
- Credit Karma Money account (must be closed separately first)
- Personalized financial recommendations
💡 Think twice before deleting: Credit Karma is genuinely free (they make money from product recommendations, not your data). The credit monitoring alone is worth keeping — it watches TransUnion and Equifax for free, alerts you to changes, and helps catch identity theft.
Credit Karma Money vs. Better Alternatives
Credit Karma Money (powered by MVB Bank) is fine but unremarkable. If you're closing it to switch banks:
- SoFi Checking: Up to 4.00% APY on savings with direct deposit, no fees
- Ally Bank: Strong savings rates, excellent app, no monthly fees
- Discover Checking: 1% cashback on debit card purchases
- Local credit union: Better rates than most online banks, plus physical branches
How Credit Karma Makes Money (It's Not Selling Your Data)
Common misconception: Credit Karma doesn't sell your personal data. They make money through affiliate commissions — when they recommend a credit card, loan, or insurance product and you sign up, Credit Karma gets a referral fee from the financial institution.
This is why you see targeted product recommendations. They're ads, essentially — but the credit monitoring and score tracking is legitimately free with no catch. Intuit (TurboTax's parent company) acquired Credit Karma in 2020 for $8.1 billion, and the free model hasn't changed.
Download Your Tax Returns First
If you ever used Credit Karma Tax (now Cash App Taxes), your past returns may still be accessible. Download PDF copies of all tax returns before deleting your account. You need these for at least 7 years for IRS purposes.
