How to Cancel Microsoft Copilot Pro (2026 Guide)
Updated February 2026 · Free Copilot covers most use cases
The question: Copilot Pro costs $20/month ($240/year). The free version of Copilot uses the same AI models. Pro adds AI features inside Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook — but only if you also have Microsoft 365. If you're not using AI in Office apps daily, you're overpaying.
What You Lose vs. Keep
✅ Free Copilot (keeps working):
- Chat with GPT-4-class AI at copilot.microsoft.com
- Image generation (DALL-E 3)
- Web search-grounded answers
- Code help and analysis
❌ Copilot Pro only (lost after cancel):
- AI in Word (draft documents, rewrite, summarize)
- AI in Excel (analyze data, create formulas, generate charts)
- AI in PowerPoint (generate slides from prompts)
- AI in Outlook (draft emails, summarize threads)
- Priority access during peak times
- Copilot GPT Builder (custom AI agents)

Is $20/Month Actually Worth It?
Here's when Copilot Pro makes sense:
- ✅ You use Word/Excel/PowerPoint daily AND actually use the AI features
- ✅ You process large documents, spreadsheets, or presentations regularly
- ✅ The time saved exceeds $20/month in productivity
Here's when it doesn't:
- ❌ You mostly use Copilot for chat/search (free version does this)
- ❌ You don't have Microsoft 365 (Pro's Office integration requires M365)
- ❌ You tried the AI features a few times but don't use them regularly
- ❌ You use Google Workspace instead of Microsoft Office
Free AI Alternatives
- Free Copilot: Same AI, same chat — just no Office integration
- ChatGPT (free): GPT-4o access with generous limits
- Claude (free): Excellent for writing and analysis
- Google Gemini (free): Integrates with Google Workspace if you use Docs/Sheets
- Perplexity (free): Best for research with source citations
