How to Cancel Book of the Month 2026 — Use Your Credits Before They Expire
Updated March 2026 • 6 min read
Book of the Month (BOTM) is a curated book subscription that sends you one hardcover for $16.99/month. It's one of the more charming subscription services — you pick from 5-7 curated titles, get a hardcover with exclusive BOTM editions, and there's a genuine reading community. But if your "to be read" pile is growing faster than you can read, it's time to cancel.
How to Cancel BOTM
- Log into bookofthemonth.com
- Go to Account Settings
- Click Cancel Membership
- They'll offer to skip months instead — this is actually a decent option (see below)
- Confirm cancellation if you want to fully leave
⚠️ Use your credits first! If you have accumulated BOTM credits, use them before canceling. Select books from the current or past months — credits don't survive cancellation. You can also add extra books for $9.99 each (a good deal for hardcovers).
Skip vs. Cancel
BOTM lets you skip any month for free with no penalty. This is genuinely fair — unlike most subscriptions. If you like BOTM but don't want a book every month:
- Skip months freely: No charge, no penalty, skip as many as you want
- You must actively skip by the 6th of each month — if you forget, you're charged
- Set a recurring calendar reminder on the 1st to decide: pick a book or skip
- Only cancel if you want out completely — skipping is effectively "free pause"
The Book Subscription Math
- BOTM: $16.99/month for 1 hardcover (curated, exclusive edition)
- Same book on Amazon: $14-22 for hardcover, $10-15 for paperback
- Library: $0 — free hardcovers, new releases, no deadline pressure
- Libby/OverDrive: $0 — free ebooks and audiobooks through your library card
- ThriftBooks: $3-8 for used books in good condition, free shipping over $15
- Little Free Libraries: $0 — trade books with your community
The Honest Assessment
BOTM is one of the least predatory subscription services. Fair pricing, free skipping, no dark patterns, genuine curation value, and a community. If you love it and actually read the books, $17/month for a curated hardcover isn't bad. But if books are piling up unread, every unread book is a $17 guilt monument on your shelf.
✅ The library test: Before canceling, get a library card and try Libby for one month. If you can find most of what you want to read for free, cancel BOTM and redirect the $204/year toward other things. If you genuinely miss the curation and exclusive editions, re-subscribe — at least you'll know it's intentional.
