How to Cancel Backblaze in 2026 (Save Your Files + Get a Refund)
Backblaze is one of the better backup services, but at $99/year it's not free. Whether you're switching to a local backup or just trimming costs, here's how to cancel properly.
⚡ Important: Backblaze deletes your backed-up data 30 days after your subscription ends. Download everything you need BEFORE canceling. This applies to both Personal Backup and B2 Cloud Storage.
Cancel Backblaze Personal Backup
Log in to secure.backblaze.com
Click My Settings (left sidebar)
Under Billing, click Cancel My Account
Confirm you want to cancel
You'll keep access until your paid period ends
Unlike most services, Backblaze actually lets you cancel entirely online without calling or chatting. Refreshingly honest.
Cancel Backblaze B2 Cloud Storage
B2 is pay-as-you-go, so there's no subscription to cancel. To stop charges:
Delete all files from your B2 buckets
Delete the buckets themselves
Remove any application keys you've created
If you want to close the account entirely, email deletemyaccount@backblaze.com
Download Your Files First
Web restore: Log in → select files → download as ZIP (limited to 500GB per request)
USB drive mail: Backblaze will ship your data on a USB hard drive for $189 (refundable if you return the drive within 30 days)
Backblaze Downloader app: For large restores, use their download tool for faster, resumable downloads
💡 Pro Tip: If you have a LOT of data, order the USB drive option. The $189 is fully refundable when you send back the drive, and it's much faster than downloading hundreds of GB over the internet.
Getting a Refund
Within 30 days of new purchase: Full refund available
Annual plan mid-cycle: Prorated refunds not automatic but worth asking — email bizdev@backblaze.com
Auto-renewal you didn't want: Contact support immediately — they're generally reasonable about this
Backblaze has a good reputation for fair customer service — don't expect the runaround you get from other services
Do You Still Need Cloud Backup?
Before canceling, consider whether you have an alternative backup plan:
Mac users: Time Machine + external drive covers local backup for free. Add iCloud for offsite.
Windows users: File History + external drive for local. OneDrive (5GB free with Microsoft account).
Already paying for cloud storage? Google One, iCloud+, or OneDrive may duplicate what Backblaze does.
Just photos? Google Photos (15GB free), iCloud, or Amazon Photos (unlimited for Prime members)
Alternatives If You Still Want Cloud Backup
iDrive ($59.95/year for 5TB): Backs up multiple computers, phones, and NAS devices — more versatile than Backblaze
Arq Backup ($49.99 one-time) + your own cloud: Encrypts and backs up to any cloud (Google Drive, Dropbox, S3, B2) — you own your data
Syncthing (free): Peer-to-peer sync between your devices — no cloud company involved
External SSD ($60-100 for 1-2TB): One-time cost, fastest backup speed, no subscription ever
Uninstall Backblaze Software
Mac: System Preferences → Backblaze → Uninstall. Or use the Backblaze uninstaller in /Library.
Windows: Settings → Apps → Backblaze → Uninstall
Remove the Backblaze menu bar/taskbar icon
Restart your computer to ensure all background processes stop
