Cancel Asurion Phone Insurance — You're Probably Wasting $400/Year

Updated February 2026 · 5 min read

💸 The math: $17/mo × 24 months = $408 in premiums + $275 deductible = $683 total cost for one claim

A new iPhone 16 costs $799. You're paying 85% of a new phone for insurance that sends you a refurbished one.

Asurion is the largest device insurance provider in the US. If you have AT&T, Verizon, or T-Mobile, there's a good chance you're paying for it — sometimes without realizing it. Here's why the math almost never works, and how to cancel.

The Real Cost of Asurion (By Carrier)

AT&T Protect Advantage

Monthly:$15-17/mo ($180-204/yr)Deductible:$99-275 per claim2-year total:$459-683 (with one claim)

Verizon Mobile Protect

Monthly:$14-17/mo ($168-204/yr)Deductible:$99-249 per claim2-year total:$435-657 (with one claim)

T-Mobile Protection 360

Monthly:$7-18/mo ($84-216/yr)Deductible:$99-249 per claim2-year total:$267-697 (with one claim)

Why Phone Insurance Is Usually a Bad Deal

  1. You get a refurbished phone, not a new one. Asurion claims send you a "like-new" replacement — typically a refurbished device. For $683, you could buy a new phone.
  2. Deductibles are shockingly high. Screen cracks (the most common claim) have $29-99 deductibles. But a third-party screen repair costs $50-150 — often less than the deductible plus premiums.
  3. Your phone depreciates faster than you think. After 18 months, your $1,000 phone is worth ~$400. The insurance payout is based on the depreciated value, not what you paid.
  4. Most people never file a claim. Asurion's business model works because most subscribers pay for years without ever using it. That's $400+/year in pure profit for them.
  5. Credit cards often cover it for free. Many Visa Signature, Mastercard World, and Amex cards include purchase protection and cell phone protection when you pay your phone bill with the card.

What to Do Instead (Self-Insurance)

The $15/Month Self-Insurance Plan

  1. Get a good case + screen protector ($30-50 once) — prevents 90% of damage claims
  2. Save $15/month in a separate fund — after 1 year you have $180, after 2 years $360
  3. Enable Find My iPhone / Find My Device — free theft protection
  4. Check your credit card benefits — many cover phone damage when you pay your bill with the card
  5. Consider AppleCare+ — $9.99/mo with only $29 screen repair vs Asurion's $99+

After 2 years: You've saved $360 (vs spending $408 on Asurion premiums) AND you still have the $360 if you didn't need it.

When Phone Insurance IS Worth It

Even then, consider AppleCare+ ($9.99/mo, $29 screen repair) over Asurion ($17/mo, $99+ screen repair).
