Anytime Fitness charges $38-$50/month with a 12-month contract. The name says "Anytime" — but canceling is anything but convenient. You can't cancel online, you can't cancel by phone, and you need to give 30 days' written notice. Here's the full process.
Despite the name, Anytime Fitness has one of the more restrictive cancellation policies in the gym industry. You must visit in person or send a certified letter. No phone cancellation. No email cancellation. No app cancellation.
Take a photo of the signed cancellation form. Ask the staff member for their name. Anytime Fitness locations are independently owned franchises — some have been known to "lose" cancellation paperwork. Written proof protects you.
If you can't visit in person (moved away, different hours, etc.):
| Situation | ETF |
|---|---|
| Within contract period | Remaining balance or flat fee (varies by franchise, typically $50-$250) |
| After contract (month-to-month) | No fee — just 30 days notice ✅ |
| Medical reason (with documentation) | Usually waived ✅ |
| Military deployment (PCS orders) | Waived under SCRA ✅ |
| Moved 25+ miles from any location | Usually waived (with proof) |
Anytime Fitness: $45/month × 12 = $540/year
Planet Fitness: $10/month × 12 = $120/year
Home gym (basic): $100 one-time
If you go to the gym less than 8 times/month, Planet Fitness at $10/month is almost always the better deal. If you go less than 4 times/month, home workouts save you $500+/year.
