How to Cancel Amazon Seller Account in 2026 (Close Store + Avoid Lingering Fees)
Updated 2026-03-03 ยท 7 min read
๐ธ Amazon Charges $39.99/Month for Professional Seller Accounts
If you signed up for a Professional Seller account and forgot about it, you've been charged $39.99/month even with zero sales. Many people sign up to "try selling," never list anything, and get charged for months. Downgrade to Individual (free) or close the account.
Option 1: Downgrade to Individual Plan (Free)
If you might sell again someday, downgrade instead of closing:
Go to sellercentral.amazon.com
Click Settings โ Account Info
Under Your Services, click Manage
Click Downgrade to Individual plan
Individual plan: $0/month + $0.99 per sale (only charged when you actually sell something)
Your listings remain active but you lose Professional features
Option 2: Close Your Seller Account
Resolve all pending orders โ ship or cancel any open orders
Handle FBA inventory (see below)
Wait for all payments to settle โ Amazon holds funds for up to 90 days
Go to sellercentral.amazon.com
Click Settings โ Account Info
Scroll to Close Account (under Your Account)
Click Close Account
Confirm โ Amazon processes within a few days
โ ๏ธ FBA Inventory Must Be Removed First
If you have inventory stored in Amazon's warehouses (FBA), you must create a removal order BEFORE closing. Amazon will ship items back to you or dispose of them. If you close without removing inventory, Amazon charges monthly storage fees indefinitely and may eventually dispose of your items.
Handle FBA Inventory
Seller Central โ Inventory โ Manage FBA Inventory
Select all items
Click Action โ Create removal order
Choose: Ship back to you ($0.50-$0.60 per unit) or Dispose ($0.15-$0.30 per unit)
Amazon processes removal orders in 10-14 business days
Liquidation option: Amazon can sell remaining inventory in bulk at a discount
Amazon Seller Fees to Watch
Professional plan: $39.99/month โ charges even with zero sales
FBA storage: $0.87-$2.40 per cubic foot/month (higher Oct-Dec)
FBA aged inventory surcharge: Extra fees for items stored 181+ days
Referral fees: 6-45% per sale depending on category (only on actual sales)
Advertising: If you ran PPC campaigns, check they're paused
Before Closing: Checklist
Ship or cancel all pending orders
Remove or liquidate all FBA inventory
Pause or stop all PPC advertising campaigns
Download all reports (sales, tax, returns) โ you lose access after closing
Download 1099-K tax documents for your records
Wait for final disbursement (Amazon holds reserves for 90 days after last sale)
Verify your bank account details are correct for final payment
Your Buyer Account Stays Active
Closing your Seller account does not affect your regular Amazon buyer account. You can still shop, use Prime, leave reviews, and do everything a normal Amazon customer does. The two accounts are separate even though they share login credentials.
Bottom line: If you're not actively selling, at minimum downgrade from Professional ($39.99/month) to Individual ($0/month). If you're done for good, remove FBA inventory first, then close the account. Many people are paying $480/year for a seller account they never use.
