⚠️ Secure New Coverage Before Canceling
A lapse in coverage — even one day — can increase your new insurance rate by 20-40% and is illegal in most states for auto insurance. Have your new policy active before you cancel Allstate.
Say "cancel policy" to get routed to the right department
Option 3: Written Request
Send a signed cancellation letter to your agent including:
Your full name and policy number
Desired cancellation date
Reason for cancellation
Request for refund of unearned premium
Your new insurer name and policy number
Refund: Short-Rate vs. Pro-Rata
Know which refund method applies to you:
Pro-rata (full proportional refund): You get back exactly the unused portion. Example: Cancel 3 months into a 6-month policy → 50% refund. This applies when Allstate initiates the cancellation.
Short-rate (reduced refund): Allstate may keep a small percentage as a penalty when you initiate mid-term cancellation. Typically 10% penalty. State laws vary — some states prohibit short-rate.
Ask your agent which method applies to your policy and state. If short-rate, consider waiting until renewal to switch.
Drivewise Device
If you have an Allstate Drivewise telematics device:
Unplug the OBD-II device from your vehicle
Allstate will send a return envelope — mail it back
The Drivewise app can be deleted from your phone
Failure to return may result in a small charge
Allstate Identity Protection
If you also have Allstate Identity Protection (separate from insurance):
This is a separate subscription — canceling insurance doesn't cancel it
