How to Cancel 1Password in 2026 (Free Password Managers Are Finally Good)
Updated 2026-02-19 ยท 6 min read
๐ The Password Tax
1Password charges $2.99-4.99/month for password management that Apple Keychain, Google Password Manager, and Bitwarden all do for free. In 2026, every major browser and operating system has a built-in password manager that syncs across devices. The paid password manager era is ending.
1Password Pricing (2026)
Individual: $2.99/month ($35.88/year)
Family (5 members): $4.99/month ($59.88/year)
Teams: $7.99/user/month
Business: $13.99/user/month
No free tier: Unlike Bitwarden, LastPass, and browser managers
Before Canceling: Export Your Vault
Open 1Password desktop app (not the browser extension)
Go to File โ Export โ All Items
Choose CSV format (for importing into alternatives)
Save the file somewhere secure โ it contains ALL your passwords in plain text
Import into your new manager BEFORE deleting the 1Password file
Delete the export file after importing โ don't leave plain text passwords on disk
How to Cancel
Go to my.1password.com โ sign in
Click Settings โ Billing
Click Cancel subscription (or Unsubscribe)
Your vault stays accessible in read-only mode for 30 days
After 30 days, your account is frozen (data retained for 365 days if you resubscribe)
โ ๏ธ Don't Lose Your Secret Key
1Password uses a unique Secret Key alongside your master password. Save both before canceling. If you ever want to resubscribe or access frozen data, you'll need both. Find it in Settings โ My Profile โ Secret Key. Save it in your new password manager or print it.
Free Alternatives
Bitwarden (free): Open-source, unlimited passwords, unlimited devices, 2FA โ the best free password manager, period. Premium is only $10/year if you want advanced features.
Apple Keychain/Passwords: Free โ built into macOS, iOS, iPadOS. Auto-fill, passkeys, cross-device sync. New Passwords app in iOS 18+ is a full manager.
Google Password Manager: Free โ built into Chrome, syncs across all devices, passkey support
Proton Pass (free): From the Proton privacy suite โ unlimited logins, 2FA, open-source
KeePassXC: Free, open-source, offline โ for privacy maximalists who want no cloud sync
Bitwarden Migration Guide
Create a free account at bitwarden.com
Install the Bitwarden browser extension + mobile app
Go to Tools โ Import Data
Select 1Password (csv) as the format
Upload your exported CSV
Verify all passwords imported correctly
Set up 2FA on your Bitwarden account
Uninstall the 1Password extension
When 1Password IS Worth It
Large families: Sharing vaults between 5 family members with different access levels
Business teams: Admin controls, audit logs, provisioning (but Bitwarden Business is cheaper at $6/user)
Cross-platform power users: If you use Windows + Mac + Linux + iOS + Android daily
Everyone else: Apple Keychain (Apple ecosystem) or Bitwarden (cross-platform) is free and sufficient
๐ก The Passkey Future
Passkeys are replacing passwords entirely. Apple, Google, and Microsoft all support passkeys natively and free. As more sites adopt passkeys, the value of a paid password manager approaches zero. You don't need to pay $36/year for a technology that's being made obsolete by free built-in alternatives.
๐ Security Subscription Audit
1Password + VPN + antivirus + identity protection โ security subscriptions prey on fear. Upload your bank statement to JustCancel to find every security-related charge and determine which ones are actually necessary.
